Gaudy Welsh

Gaudy Welsh refers to a style of decoration rather than a particular maker. First appearing in Staffordshire in the first half of the 1800's and recognised by its colours of blue orange and green - later using other colours too. The first pattern is most likely Tulip but was quickly followed by others. Welsh production commenced about 10 years after the Stafforshire potteries. Much loved in Wales and often displayed beautifully on large welsh dressers. Mostly unmarked it is difficult to know the origins of many pieces. In Staffordshire, Allertons was a prolific producer. If a piece does have a makers name it is likely from the later period of production.
